2019 Candidate List

We created a short list of 20 ram lamb candidates, there are only 8 ram lambs that will be selected by people that reserved ram lambs for this year, nobody will be left with just one to pick from. We created this list by looking at the performance data of the lambs and visually inspecting the ram lambs. We realize that not everyone is looking for the same thing, we tried to include a good mix of candidates from moderate growth to high growth as well as above average parasite resistance to excellent parasite resistance (we did not consider any lambs with below parasite resistance). There are compromises to be made, growth typically comes at the price of an increased birth weight and the best parasite resistance does not always come with the highest growth.

In our 100% grass based management system we feed no grain or grain byproducts to any of the sheep. Not creep feeding the lambs causes a large variation in lamb weights, within a particular year as well as between years, EBVs have been the best way to identify genetic potential. It might be daunting when first looking at EBVs, please ask if you have questions. We prefer getting good genetics rather than a lamb that had luck on its side.

The ram lambs will be registered and transferred to their new owners at the time of sale.

Two of the listed ram lambs (GBR 9073 and GBR9112) are 87.5%, the rest are 100%. If you plan on registering your lambs it would be better to not choose either of these two ram lambs as we cannot register them upon sale (they need to be 1 yr old to get their coat inspection), these two will be sold at a $15 registration discount. If you really like one of them we can organize a coat inspection next year, their mothers have passed a coat inspection already, but logistically it is just easier for us to sell these two rams as commercial (not registered)

Katahdins have an open registration book which means that you can breed non-katahdin ewes/rams to registered Katahdin rams/ewes, if you keep breeding the offspring to registered Katahdins you can register them as 100% Katahdin once they reach 87.5%, as long as they pass a coat inspection . Ram lambs that are 87.5% require a coat inspection at 1 year old as well as a coat inspection of their dam to be registered as 100%.

EBVs - Estimated Breeding Values

Our sheep have EBVs from NSIP (National Sheep Improvement Program), this means that we submit pedigree and performance data to NSIP together with many other Katahdin flocks across the country. We also actively work with other flocks to get genetics tested in different management systems. EBVs are then calculated based on the performance of grand parents, parents, full siblings and half siblings. EBVs are corrected for birth type / rear type, age of the dam, management system (pasture quality, feed etc.) and the specific year.

Growth EBVs are measured in kg., 1 kg = 2.2 lb

A larger number is heavier (more growth). The best way to read growth EBVs if you don't have EBVs for your own animals are to compare candidates with each other. E.g. GBR 9005 has a PWWT of 2.9 while GBR 9014 has a PWWT of 4.5, this means that GBR 9014 will produce lambs that grow about 0.8 kg (1.76 lb.) heavier than GBR 9005 because of genetics if they were to be bred to the same ewe under the same conditions. It is 0.8 kg. because (4.5 - 2.9)/2, it is divided by 2 because only half the genetics come from the ram.

When looking at the phenotype data on this page you will notice that the heaviest lamb does not have the highest growth EBV values, EBVs are corrected for the fact that that lamb was a single raised by a mature ewe.

Parasite resistance A smaller number is better parasite resistance. EBVs are measured in %, the %  below (negative value) or above (positive) average that you expect the offspring of this ram to have when doing fecal egg count testing at weaning or post weaning. Lower is better.

Fecal egg counts are compared against the average of the flock (lamb crop). GBR 9103 has a PFEC of -100, if he were to be bred with a ewe that also had a PFEC of -100 then you would expect their offspring to have post weaning fecal egg counts of that are 100% lower than the average Katahdin lamb (-100 is 100% below average). On the other hand, GBR 9112 has a PFEC of -4, so his offspring will be slightly below average if he was bred with a ewe that has similar parasite resistance.

The growth EBVs speak to the genetic component to growth and does not account for environment or chance (good or bad luck). In the same way parasite resistance EBVs speak to the genetic component, there are still other factors that influence the results of actual fecal egg count results. Genetics you can control when you select for it where as you have little control over environment / luck (good or bad).

Phenotype, Sire & Dam

This list shows basic details about the ram lamb candidates, the raw numbers as far as growth is concerned as well as detail about the sire, the dam and the lambing and rearing history of the dam.

Katahdins can be polled, have scurs or even have horns, all are acceptable. We cull if they have horns in our flock so we do not keep/sell horned animals. Scurs are little growths that are attached to the skin, you can feel them in the area where the horns would have been, in most lambs they are not visible. Many people do not realize that their rams have scurs because they are not visible most of the time and they often break-off while the ram is young.

The "?" in the Dam Lambing column is where we know that these ewes have lambed before we bought them but do not know the exact history of what they produced when they lambed on their birth farms.
