Registered Katahdin Hair Sheep Breeding Stock

Please Note: All our breeding stock for the 2022 lambing season have already been reserved.

2022 lambing is scheduled to start March 21st. We exposed just over 175 ewes to 8 rams in separate breeding groups for 20 days after which we removed the rams, combined all the breeding groups and introduced a cleanup ram for an additional 14 days.

This year we used 4 (one for cleanup) of our home grown ram lambs from 2021 in order to test their performance against the other rams. We also used ram lambs from HOUND RIVER FARM KATAHDIN SHEEP (Roxanne Newton) and LC Ranch (Leon Gehman). Two of the adult rams we used are very well tested with over 400 tested offspring between them, our old man Midnight (WHK 1352) that we have been using for many years as well as Morgan (BUL 18403) that we got from Red Barn Katahdins located in Iowa. We also used a two year old home grown ram that we are in process of testing, this will be second year that he will be siring offspring here, he also sired offspring at LC Ranch for 2022 lambing.

Below we have a bit more detail about the rams we used for breeding. The graphs show where they rank for various traits (you can move your mouse over the graphs for more detail).

Midnight has been siring lambs at Gibraltar Farm since 2017 and he has over 200 offspring tested in NSIP. We have 24 of his daughters and many grand daughters lambing here in 2022. He was bred to 10 ewes this year. He combines excellent growth with good parasite resistance and his daughters always impress us with good mothering.

We bought Morgan as a ram lamb in 2018 from Red Barn Katahdins (Steve Bull). He had offspring here in 2019 and 2020, he took a working vacation at Ewe Lamb Right Farm in 2021. He has 150 offspring tested in NSIP between our two farms. He has 9 daughters and one grand daughter lambing here in 2022. He has excellent growth with good mothering, milk and parasite resistance.

GBR 0014 (a son of BUL 18403) is a home grown ram that sired just under 40 lambs here last year. We are lambing 14 ewe lambs out of him in 2022. His dam is a ewe we bought from Misty Oaks Farm (Kathy Bielek), she is a consistent twinner and we have two of her daughters retained in our flock.  He has excellent growth and milk and good parasite resistance. We are really excited to see how his daughters will do this year.

He was used for 2022 lambs at LC Ranch, so he should have extra offspring there. It worked out well that they lamb a few months before us, so we had time to quarantine him between breedings.
